Buyer's Guide - MTB Tyres
Consider where you will be riding and how the riding conditions might vary. Fast XC or rocky descents? Mud or dry? Hard pack or loose terrain?
Folding Tyres
- The wire bead is replaced with Kevlar fibres to allow folding
- Tyres are lighter than wire beaded by about 50 - 90g.
UST Tyres or Tubeless Tyres
- This system needs no tube
- The tyre and the rim fit together to provide an airtight seal
- Advantages
- no sudden loss of pressure in case of a puncture
- better impact resistance and valve tear off due to the tyre slipping on the rim is impossible.
- Disadvantages
- fitting requires more effort. Follow fitting instructions closely.
- NOTE: It is recommended to insert a standard tube in tubeless tyres to repair a roadside puncture.
Buying Criteria (
or
):
- Grip: Tread offers increased grip. Great for wet and muddy conditions but increases rolling resistance and weight.
- Speed: Low rolling resistance & lightweight.
- Puncture Protection: Strengthened sidewalls offer advanced puncture protection on rocky terrain.
- Durability: Heavier casing increases overall duability.
- Race Specific: Ultra light casing reduces rolling resistance and weight. Not good for everyday use as durability is sacrificed for race specific ride.
