National Cycle Routes Crossing the East of England

  1. National Cycle Network - Sustrans is the UK's leading sustainable transport charity and is the co-ordinator of the hugely popular National Cycle Network.

The National Cycle Network map shows all the open and proposed cycle routes (but takes a while to open!).  The Route Numbering System also describes all of the routes.
    • Route 51 - Newmarket is on the National Cycle Route 51.  Eventually this route will link Felistowe and Oxford.  The route is fully open between Newmarket and Cambridge.
    • Route 11 - this route will connect Harlow in Essex with King’s Lynn in Norfolk going via Cambridge.  It runs close to Newmarket, passing through Bottisham.
    • Route 13 - this route will go north from Colchester to Fakenham, passing through, Bury St Edmunds and Thetford.  The section north of Thetford is now fully open.
    • Route 1 - this route goes from Fakenham to Harwich via Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester and Felixstowe.  It is part of a longer route that runs along the North Sea Coast.
  2. The National Byway - The National Byway is a 4,000 mile (6,436 km) signposted leisure cycle route round Britain on attractive and quiet rural lanes.  There are over 1,000 places of interest and historic sites to visit along the way.  The routes in the east of England are still under development but will run from Ipswich in Suffolk.  One route will go via Mid Suffolk to Bury St. Edmunds, then onto The Fens to the south of Peterborough, the other route will run via South Suffolk across to the north of Bedford.
  3. The North Sea Cycle Route - The North Sea Cycle Route runs around the edge of the North Sea.  It is 6000km (3750 miles) long and passes through 8 countries.  The UK section of the route runs from Harwich to John O'Groats.  Cyclists would take a ferry from John O'Groats to Bergen in Norway (via the Scottish Isles) or from Harwich to the Hook of Holland to continue on the route.  You can easily divide the route into smaller sections or do the whole thing if you fancy a challenge!
