Buyer's Guide - Road Tyres

When buying road tyres consider what type of riding you will be doing and the conditions you will be riding in.

• Long regular training rides or once-weekly time trails?
• Summer only riding on good road surfaces or all year riding on wet and muddy roads? 

Tubular Tyres

• In a Tubular, the tube is sewn directly into the tyre which is then glued onto a special rim
• Advantages
  • increased puncture stablility, preventing loss of control
• Disadvantages
  • fitting requires more effort
  • once punctured a tub has to be replaced
  • labour intensive manufacturing process explains high cost of good quality tubulars.

Buying Criteria ( or ):

• Durability: Heavier casing increases overall duability. Good training or all-year tyres.
• Race Specific: Ultra light casing reduces rolling resistance and weight. Not good for everyday use as durability is sacrificed for race specific ride.
• Puncture Protection: Tyre offering an increased level of puncture resistance.
• Grip: Tyre offers increased grip.
