New Newmarket shop mechanic, Dave Miller, put in a strong debut performance for the team, coming in 4th in the Senior Racer category – 22 seconds off a podium place. James Dyke returned to racing with a 24th place finish, and Darren Styles ended up 34th. Will Mitcham and Richard Bettaney both had problems resulting in pulling out after only 1 lap.
In the Women’s warrior category, Susan Boles had her first taste of the podium with a 2nd place finish.

Race report from team member Iain:
Friday practice was on a damp, but drying course, including some very slippery muddy sections.
A couple of good climbs, and plenty of challenging single track.
There was much talk of tyre choice amongst the team, ending in many changes.
Practice included tumbles for both Kemp and Styles on the same section, on different laps, neither suffering too much, just cuts and bruises.
Friday night saw heavy rain, but by the race start at midday the course was drier than Friday practice.
Kemp opted to start for the team, and his casual approach saw him starting right near the back of the ??? strong field.
Strong progress was made on the first lap, many places being gained.
Handing over to Bettaney, the teams strongest rider, more places were gained.
Styles, Balaam and Stoveld followed with strong laps, leaving the Revell team hovering around 13th place in the open category, contested by 68 teams.
A miscalculation of Kemps lap time in free traffic lead to a mix up with transition, but this only cost a minute or so.
A crowd pleasing skid, then wheelie went slightly awry for Styles on his next lap, which ended lying in someone’s pasta in the crowd!
Strong laps followed, then the drizzle began at around 8pm, and continued throughout the night until around 8am, transforming the course in to a quagmire in places, wrong tyres choices leading to clogging to the point of wheels not turning through the bikes forks.
These conditions lead to a fall? (I think) for Stoveld, causing a problem with an old ankle injury, and forcing him to withdraw for the race duration.
The conditions also hit the morale of Balaam, who also chose not to ride again at the 1am mark, but became team bike cleaner to ease the load on the remaining team.
The 3 remaining members had to dig hard in the difficult conditions, fast turn arounds meaning no chance of sleep.
Bettaney decided to call it a day after his 5th lap, as conditions continued to worsen.
Kemp opted to do a slow 2 lap stint to give the remaining member Styles a chance to get some rest.
Kemp informed Styles at the transition that as the track was drying, the mud was becoming ‘claggy’, as my bike condition proved, and suggested that one more lap would be an achievement as we were all suffering from fatigue now.
Styles completed a strong lap in the conditions, but Kemp had nothing left to give, so the team retired at 8.45am.
A great event for the team, many lessons learned.
A strategy leaving time for team members to sleep, and a permanent pit helper would have made a huge difference in hindsight.
The team will return stronger for sure!
There was a great turnout for the Revel Outdoors Race Team at the second of the 2010 Mud Sweat & Gears Eastern series races in Thetford Forest, and some great results. The course was dry and fast with no place for rest.

The hard core of the Revel Outdoors Race Team turned up at Tunstall to contest the first of the Mud, Sweat and Gears Eastern Series MTB races. After weeks of unbroken sunshine, the heavens opened all night and throughout the race day, making for the slushy mudfest that we’ve become accustomed to for Tunstall races.
Jamie Wightman was up in 6th place for most of the race, but blew up on the last of 7 laps allowing four riders to overtake right near the end of the lap. He finished 10th in the 17+, 2 hour, racer category. Wightman collided with a fast-moving tree in the middle of the race, but was heroically backed up by team mate Darren Styles who muscled into the offending tree for him.
Styles’ race was a similar one, finishing in 33rd place after a painful 6th and final lap.
New shop recruit, Daniel Collins, put in a top effort to win the 17+, 1 hour, Warrior category.

Three members of the Revel Outdoors Race Team took part in the Cambridge Rollapaluza organised by Team Cambridge, at the British Legion in Bottisham.
Jamie Wightman qualified 4th while Neil Payne and James Dyke were just outside the 16th place required to get through to the next round. A late 2nd attempt at qualifiying by James put him right up into 7th securing himself a place in the knockouts.
James continued into the quarter-finals where he was knocked out.
Jamie made it all the way to the semi-finals where he was beaten by last year’s champ, although they posted the fastest two times of the night. Jamie then won the minor final against Jef Sharp to secure 3rd place.
3 Members of the Revel Outdoors Race Team took part in the 3rd Thetford Winter Series race of ‘09/’10. We were all racing in the 2 hour categories. We had our team pit near the start line and Sarah was out with the camera.
Results:
Jamie Wightman: 16th, 2hr male 16-39, 4 laps 2:00:51
Rob Balaam: 70th, 2hr male 16-39, 4 laps 2:26:08
Richard Muchmore: 12th, 2hr male 40+, 4 laps 2:05:45
I haven’t been outside training on the bike for about 3 weeks now, and it’s driving me nuts. Am I just being a softie? I had all the right intentions when I took the Orange R8 up to the Lakes, but here’s what happened:
To be fair, the trails up there were almost impossible to walk on without crampons, so I probably wouldn’t have spent much time upright on the bike. Even the local bike shop in Ambleside seemed to be discouraging customers from test riding bikes because of the conditions.
So the holidays are over, and it’s time to get pedaling (and peddling!) bikes again. We have a lot planned for this year, so I’ve decided not to race the BMBS (NPS) races this year. I’m going to try to stick to more local events, team events, and possibly more road.
